I’m writing this for those of you who have a deep, nagging belief that something is incredibly wrong with the world, but you can’t put your finger on it.
I’m writing to those of you who have been burned by religion or who are having doubts about the existence of God.
I’m writing for those who have seen the absolute corruption and destruction of faith in your institutions.
I’m writing for you who have seen friends and family betray, disavow, scorn, or otherwise scar you.
But most importantly, I’m writing this to those of you who are barely hanging on. Those of you who are tired and oppressed and confused and scared.
Those of you who can’t see a reason to stick around in this life.
This is intended to be a contribution to a discussion that has been happening for ages. I am by no means claiming to have everything figured out or looking down on anyone else’s view of reality. There are over seven billion people on this planet, which means that there are over seven billion perceptions of realities. Seven billion people who read this will come away with seven billion different meanings.
I realize that to truly become all that we’re destined for, we can’t stay the same.
We’ve got to move. We’ve got to change. That’s what life is. It’s fluid and changing.
I have come to realize that there are certain truths and principles that guide and sustain our existence, things that are true and functioning whether we believe in them or not.
I heard someone say, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” I believe that unless we answer some foundational questions within ourselves, we will lead very empty and unfulfilling lives.
So that’s why I’ve written this. I want to give you a different viewpoint on life, something that you are free to reject or accept. My hope is as you read this you feel a wide range of emotions; that you see certain lines leap up off the page and smack you across the forehead; and ultimately that you walk away knowing that somehow you’ve been forced to make some changes to your thinking and beliefs.
All that I ask is that you read through this with an open mind, open spirit, and that in the back of your mind, you let this question linger:
“What if…?
Sincerely,
Brian Herr
